Our Vegan Ham Sausage, Vegan Beef Steak, Vegan Chicken Fillet, Vegan Chicken Strips, Vegetarian Spread, Vegan Mincemeat, Vegetarian Burger, Vegetarian Crispy Burger and Vegetarian Escalopes and Nuggets are all vegan. The use of egg albumen as an ingredient in all other Rügenwalder Mühle vegetarian options is currently still necessary to ensure that these foods resemble the original meat-based products as closely as possible in terms of appearance, texture and taste. However, we are working on recipes for these products that do not include any animal-based ingredients at all.
We welcome a varied and nutritional-physiologically balanced diet. Meat is still an important component - but not a must.
More and more people in Germany live on a flexitarian diet, i.e. they eat meat and sausage at meals less frequently. For this reason, we offer our customers tasty meaty and vegetarian/vegan products, which are in the sense of a conscious diet.
If anyone has the competence to produce vegetarian/vegan alternatives so that they taste like meat and sausage, then it should be us.
In the course of development of our meat free products, we always consult the ProVeg when it comes to specific issues; particularly when it comes to replacing ingredients of animal origin by vegetable alternatives. And also for the future, we are focusing on a constructive exchange to further improve our products.
Our common objective is to continue growth of the entire category of “vegetarian/vegan” products, to enlarge consumer choice and making it even more attractive for consumers.
All our vegetarian products contain valuable rapeseed oil. Depending on the product, we additionally use the following main ingredients:
Chickens’ egg white: Vegetarian Ham Sausage, Vegetarian Salami – including mini-sized versions, Vegetarian Sausages – including mini-sized versions, Vegetarian Meatballs in a cup; and for the pan, Vegetarian Escalopes, Vegetarian Nuggets, Vegetarian Bratwurst Sausage.
Soya: Vegan Beef Steak, Vegan Chicken Fillet, Vegan Chicken Strips, Vegetarian Meatballs in a cup, Vegetarian Escalopes, Vegetarian Nuggets, Vegetarian Burger, Vegan Mincemeat, Vegetarian Bratwurst Sausage, Vegetarian Crispy Burger.
Wheat: Vegan Beef Steak, Vegan Chicken Fillet, Vegetarian Salami – including mini-sized versions, Vegetarian Meatballs in a cup; and for the pan, Vegetarian Escalopes, Vegetarian Nuggets, Vegetarian Burger, Vegetarian Bratwurst Sausage, Vegetarian Crispy Burger.
Peas: Vegetarian Spread, Vegan Ham Sausage.
The cheese used for our Vegetarian Escalopes "Cordon Bleu" does not contain animal rennet and is therefore purely vegetarian.
A majority of our vegetarian products is manufactured in a specifically designed and separate area at our location in Bad Zwischenahn. Moreover, we have bought and newly equipped a building opposite the mother factory - exclusively for the packaging of our Veggie products.
For the production of a few Veggie products, we are still partially using the same rooms and machines as for our meat products and we are also working with partner companies.
The risk of mixing is avoided by measures originating from our allergen management. This includes, for example, the temporal separation in the production of meat free and meat-containing products, including a special, intensive intermediate cleaning. In addition, the meat is stored separately from the other raw materials and different equipment in buckets, trolleys and vessels. Moreover, raw materials, semi-finished products and final products are clearly marked to avoid confusion. Particularly important in this context is a regular training and raising awareness of the production staff.
We regularly monitor the measures taken in order to check their effectiveness. In addition, we have expanded the existing analysis plan of the SGS INSTITUTE FRESENIUS by corresponding tests. Moreover, all our vegetarian products are certified with the V-label for "vegetarian" or "vegan".
All raw materials used are not subject to GMO labelling according to Regulations 1829/2003 and 1830/2003.
No, we currently do not source ingredients from controlled organic or regional cultivation. This is mainly linked to the fact that some raw materials are not available from controlled organic cultivation or not in the quantity and quality we require.
We are, of course, also purchasing ingredients from the region from time to time. However, we do not specially mark it on the packaging. We do not focus primarily on regional origin, but on the best quality of our raw materials.
The eggs we use for production of our vegetarian products come exclusively from free-range husbandry.
We are thus following the wish of many consumers who wrote us and have convinced us to buy only eggs from chickens from free-range husbandry for our vegetarian products. The origin of the eggs can be documented at any time.
Yes, all our vegetarian products are also suitable for pregnant women as part of a balanced diet. For we do not process raw whole eggs, but exclusively pasteurised protein powder, which is provided by a certified specialist supplier. In addition, all our meat free products are heated during manufacturing.
In the sense of a varied and balanced diet, our meat free products are in principle also suitable for kids.

Yes, for a higher level of security our vegetarian products are also controlled by the independent SGS INSTITUTE FRESENIUS.
No, we have no fears of a mix-up, since we have sold over 80 million products and we have not received such a complaint by a single consumer that he/she has bought a Veggie product unknowingly or accidentally. Finally, the vegetarian characteristics are clearly indicated and highlighted in colour on the packaging, which means that an error by the consumer is virtually excluded. In addition, the products bear the V-label of the German Vegetarian Association.
More and more people in Germany want to reduce their meat and sausage consumption, but do not want to miss the typical taste, the appearance and the texture of meat and sausage. Our vegetarian products meet this customer requirement.
We are convinced that meat names for Veggie products give consumers a good orientation: they provide information on essential product characteristics such as taste, texture, appearance, preparation and use. Product name like "Roast Piece" do not provide this guidance: Is this an escalope schnitzel, a meatball or even a vegetarian fillet?
In the manufacture of all our products, we only use additives, which are absolutely necessary and are constantly working on reducing the number and quantity. So, all our vegetarian products are free from flavour enhancers. We only use spices and natural flavours instead (tested by the SGS INSTITUTE FRESENIUS).
